CT recognition of thorotrast-induced intracranial and lumbar arachnoiditis.

چکیده
In the 1930s and 1940s the radioactive contrast material colloidal thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) was frequently used in radiographic examinations. The agent was used mainly for angiography and to a lesser extent for myelography, ventriculography, pyelography, and hepatolienography. The late clinical complications and conventional radiographic manifestations of thorium administration have been well documented. We report a case of chronic arachnoiditis and myelopathy to illustrate the unusual but probably diagnostic computed tomographic (CT) appearance of the head and spine.

MR imaging of lumbar arachnoiditis.
To assess the usefulness of MR in defining the changes of lumbar arachnoiditis, we reviewed retrospectively the MR, plain-film myelographic, and CT myelographic findings in 100 patients referred for evaluation of failed-back-surgery syndrome. In 11 of 12 cases of arachnoiditis demonstrated by plain-film and CT myelography, an abnormal configuration of nerve roots was seen by MR. The correlated ...
متن کاملPseudoarachnoiditis in Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension
The most common causes of intracranial hypotension include persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage from lumbar puncture, spontaneous CSF leakage, or excessive CSF drainage. Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is defined as a syndrome of reduced CSF pressure that occurs in the absence of dural puncture, surgery, or trauma. The pathogenesis is generally thought to be an occult leak of...
متن کاملCT of long-standing ankylosing spondylitis with cauda equina syndrome.
The authors present distinctive computed tomographic (CT) findings in two cases of long-standing ankylosing spondylitis accompanied by the cauda equina syndrome. Multiple, asymmetric erosions of the posterior elements of the lumbar spine on CT were correlated with thecal diverticula demonstrated by myelography. The pathogenesis of these erosions may be related to arachnoiditis in the early phas...
متن کاملImaging of lumbar spinal surgery complications
UNLABELLED Lumbar spine surgery for spinal stenosis is a frequently performed procedure and was the fastest growing type of surgery in the US from 1980 to 2000. With increasing surgical invasiveness, postoperative complications also tend to be higher. Cross-sectional imaging techniques (CT and MRI) are more sensitive than radiographs and play an increasingly important role in evaluation of pati...
متن کاملBenign lumbar arachnoiditis: MR imaging with gadopentetate dimeglumine.
MR imaging was performed in 13 patients with benign lumbar arachnoiditis both before and after IV injection of gadopentetate dimeglumine. The arachnoiditis was proved by previous myelography in 12 patients and by noncontrast MR imaging in one patient. The disease was presumably the result of previous myelography and/or surgery. It was characterized as mild in two patients, moderate in two patie...
